The association was founded on 24 April 1926 to promote the Naval Act, through which the Navy would receive new basic equipment. Indirectly, this also helped create a foundation for our present-day shipbuilding industry during the years of economic depression. After the wars, the association supported the rebuilding of our merchant fleet and launched youth activities, including by establishing the Finnish Sail Training Association. Today, the role of the Finnish Maritime Association is to serve as a maritime cooperation forum, highlight the significance of shipping and other maritime activities, increase interest in maritime sectors, and raise their appreciation and awareness.
